A Hampton University graduate won $250,000 to support her organic cosmetics company and her alma mater is $75,000 richer. Kadidja Dosso, 26, and her team, Dosso Beauty, on Tuesday were named an HBCU grand prize winner through Black Ambition, a contest started by Virginia Beach native Pharrell Williams. His nonprofit Black Ambition provides funding for “Black and Latinx entrepreneurs” who are launching tech, design, health care and start-ups. The other grand-prize winner, Michigan-based company Livegistics, received a $1 million prize for its cloud-based platform that promotes transparency, accountability and real-time information tracking. Growing up, Kadidja Dosso dreamed of building her own organic beauty empire. She fixed and styled her friends’ hair in high school, and as a student at Hampton University, a Historically Black College and University (HBCU) in Hampton, Virginia, her beauty skills earned her extra income doing freelance makeup for other students.

Synthetic Hair Irritated My Scalp And Almost Made Me Quit Braids. This Black-Owned Hypoallergenic Option Changed Everything. I always loved the way braids looked on other people. I appreciated the fun cornrow designs, the beauty of a nice set of knotless box braids, and some of the bold colors people were forgoing black and brown shades to try.

And on the more affordable side, there’s Dosso Beauty, created by Kadidja Dosso. She spent a year cold-calling and researching manufacturers that would make a hair product for her that was itch free, hypoallergenic, and prewashed. Her final product is made of “a combination of PVC and acrylic resin” — plastics that are less irritating than those used in Kanekalon — and is washed before it ships.

If you’ve ever experienced unbearable irritation when wearing synthetic braids in the past, you’ll thank me later for this recommendation. One black-owned company, Dosso Beauty, has a hypo-allergenic, anti-itch pre-stretched braiding hair that feels soft and looks more natural than the cheaper synthetic brands when finished. Another company, Spetra, has an anti-bacterial pre-stretched braiding hair that sensitive scalp girls will love too. I have personally used both and I did not experience any irritation with either.
